CHAPEL ROW IDENTITY

What's in a brand?

In 2025, Goat Group completed two real estate purchases on Jersey’s historic Esplanade at the heart of St Helier’s finance and business district. Adjacent properties, linking a row of five buildings from 17.5 to 21, the site includes a long vacant office constructed in the 1990s, a listed granite warehouse, and a predominantly derelict site. Goat Group is embarking on two landmark developments: state-of-the-art offices where an investment in innovative architecture will form a defining new identity for the Esplanade, civic in its presence, connecting to Commercial Street, where the architecture will invigorate a neglected aspect of the capital. When realised, the vision for the development will both celebrate existing heritage and, in time, become St Helier’s future heritage. The resonating aspect of the Brand Identity investigation, led by brand experts, The Beach, focused on the Esplanade and Commercial Street, adopting a principle of recognising the area’s historical past before adding a new chapter. Research led to the Jersey Archive and a trove of historic information from the last 150 years. ‘Chapel Row’ derives its name from a chapel that once stood at today’s 17.5 Esplanade between the existing late-nineteenth century granite warehouse at No.18 and a store at No. 17. Established when Rev. Philippe Filleul and others purchased land, it became a Chapel of Ease of St. Helier, and was intended to minister to the large sea-faring community. This community became St Andrew’s Church in 1869; however, in 1926, the church moved to First Tower to serve its growing residential population, and the deconsecrated church building was sold to Sidney Horman Limited in 1934. The development of ‘Chapel Row’ reflects backwards yet projects forward to create a defining future for the Esplanade and Commercial Street.
